Junior Designer
Studio Shaolin is a Honolulu-based interior design firm specializing in residential designs and renovation. We are looking for a capable and motivated Junior Designer to join our team. This part-time, independent contractor position requires someone who is self-motivated, highly organized, creative, meticulous, and good with tracking details and numbers.
The ideal candidate has at least two years of experience, a flexible schedule, is personable, intelligent, logical, articulate, and hard-working, loves design, multi-tasking and is able to roll with the punches. Passion for maintaining efficiency and accuracy in a creative environment and building a brand is key.
Candidate MUST currently live on Oahu, relocations will not be considered.

Perform site documentation - photos and detailed measurements of layout, elevations, windows and all existing items being utilized in the design
Assisting with miscellaneous project related design tasks
Assist with design presentation prep - decks, samples, sourcing
Maintaining and organizing office sample library, project binders, project materials
Running errands

Create proposals and purchase orders
Vendor maintenance (changing/updating account info)
Reach out to vendors for product information/coordinating consultations

Styling and management of photoshoots
Other miscellaneous tasks as assigned

Must have at least two years experience in the Interior Design field or equivalent experience
Proficient in AutoCAD (or equivalent software), a plus
Working knowledge of Studio Designer, Canva, Slack and Google Drive, a plus
Must have reliable WIFI, computer access (preferably Mac) and iPad.
Have reliable transportation to go to and from job sites, showrooms, meetings, etc.

This independent contractor position requires someone who is ready to lead a team and knows all the ins and outs of design projects.
The ideal candidate has at least seven years of experience, a flexible schedule, is personable, intelligent, logical, articulate, and a great leader. Passion for maintaining efficiency and accuracy in a creative environment and building a brand is key.

Lead and manage design projects from concept through installation, ensuring quality, consistency, and on-time delivery across all active work.
Translate the firm's creative vision into executed designs, overseeing FF&E selection, space planning, specifications, and presentation development.
Serve as the senior point of contact for clients throughout the design process, building lasting relationships and ensuring a best-in-class client experience.
Review and approve all project deliverables before they reach the Creative Director for final sign-off.

Directly manage designers, project coordinators, and support staff; conduct regular performance reviews and mentorship.
Lead hiring, onboarding, and professional development initiatives across the design team.
Foster a studio culture of accountability, creativity, and collaboration.
Establish and uphold studio standards, workflows, and internal processes.

Oversee all operational systems including project management tools, vendor relationships, procurement processes, and studio logistics.
Partner with ownership to develop and execute business strategy, growth initiatives, and new service offerings.
Manage client proposals, contracts, and scope of work documents in coordination with the Creative Director.
Drive business development efforts including outreach, press, partnerships, and referral cultivation.
Represent the firm at industry events, trade showrooms, and with media and PR contacts.
What You Are Not Responsible For
Final creative direction: the Creative Director retains ultimate authority over the firm's aesthetic vision and final design decisions.
Financial oversight and accounting: CFO-level responsibilities including financial reporting, tax strategy, and firm-wide budgeting remain with firm ownership/finance.
Marketing/Branding

7–12+ years of experience in interior design, with at least 3 years in a senior or leadership capacity.
Demonstrated ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and team members simultaneously.
Strong business acumen with experience in studio operations, client management, and vendor negotiation.
Proficiency in design software (AutoCAD, SketchUp, Studio Designer, or equivalent) and project management platforms.
Bachelor's or Master's degree in Interior Design or related field; NCIDQ certification a plus.
A collaborative spirit with the confidence to lead — and the self-awareness to know when to defer.
