Modern Trends We’ve Been Loving

In 2021 we’ve been bombarded with new trends and DIYs, but nothing is cozier and lounge-able than a simple modern home. Natural light, open floor plans, and an overall sleek look has us drooling over these modern design trends we expect to see more of in 2022. Follow along to see our favorites and who knows, maybe we’ll incorporate them into our upcoming projects!

Black and White With Wood Tones

Nothing screams modern more than a black and white look. Kitchen islands, cabinets, countertops, and walls are all easy ways to show off a white look while incorporating black hardware. To keep things grounded we suggest pairing black and white with wood tones for a balanced and warm appearance. Wooden seating, cabinets, and floors are usually a foolproof way to include wood in a space for a natural look.

Waterfall Kitchen Islands

The heart of the home deserves this kind of attention. Waterfall kitchen islands are stunning and pull together the ultimate modern look for a home. Deirdre Sullivan explains in Gorgeous Kitchens With Waterfall Countertops that “unlike traditional toppers, which are flat slabs that sit on top of base cabinets or an island, waterfall countertops flow over the sides to the floor creating a seamless appearance. While most types are made of luxurious materials like marble or quartz, budget-friendly versions, which are equally beautiful, include butcher block or stainless steel.” You can play around with the underside of the island by adding a pop of color or wood to contrast the countertop.

Wallpaper in Awkward Spaces

Will we ever give up a chance to use wallpaper? The answer is never. You can always have wallpaper. But this time, we’re suggesting it with a twist. Using wallpaper in awkward places can create a new life and easily become a favorite place to hang out in any home. We love how this little breakfast nook was revived with classy modern furniture and some wallpaper to fill the space. Tip: If you have minimal use of colors around the house, consider a bold wallpaper to bring in some color.

Cement & Plaster on Floors and Walls

Using these treatments creates a dramatic and texturized look that can be carried throughout the house or saved for a special room. The soft cream look produces a neutralized environment perfect for lounging. Not only do they withhold well, but it “turns out they're also long-lasting and environmentally safe (free of VOCs),” Caroline Biggs explains in Experts Explain Why Plaster Walls, an Old-School Interior Design Detail, Are Trending Once Again. A blend of this look and arched doorways give off Kim K vibes, the queen of curating a modern minimalistic mansion.
